Creating Progress Over Perfection
Often times we look at the number on the scale for progress. We account all our “good” or “bad” nutrition for our results, when we should be just be asking ourselves if we are making progress. You don’t have to be perfect you just have to keep moving forward and progressing.
When I started my journey over 10 years ago I just wanted to be skinny. I was a perfectionist and I was an extreme dieter/exerciser or I was doing absolutely nothing. This lead me to a mindset of perfection over progress instead of progress over perfection. As I furthered along my journey I realized that being “skinny” wasn’t going to actually achieve the desired look I wanted. My blood sugar was all over the place from eating less and exercising more, my energy was horrible, I was crabby all the time, I had lost a ton of weight and yet still felt like crap. To add to that I didn’t have the body I so was desperately working to achieve either. It wasn’t until I started learning about lifting heavy (i.e. growing muscles), eating nutritious food and exercising smarter not harder that progress started moving in front of perfection.
As a busy military spouse with a deployed husband, a mom of three very active girls, volunteering for different organizations and running a business; I can tell you there isn’t room for perfection. However, there is always room for progress. The photo above was taken on Saturday May 5th, 2018. I am not the leanest I have ever been, but I am the strongest, most balanced I have ever been and I feel amazing. When I took this photo it was to see my progress in strength and to remind myself where I had started and how much I have overcome the past decade. I definitely have my good days and I definitely have my bad days, but I show up each day and move forward and progress.
While I know when you don’t feel the sexiest, leanest, strongest, skinniest you don’t want to take photos, but I would encourage you to take the photos. As you progress down your journey you are going to want to look back at them. As you can tell in my starting photo I didn’t think anyone would ever see it, but every time I take a comparison photo I am so ever grateful I have it as a reminder of where my journey began.
This week I encourage you to start somewhere and move yourself forward. Stop thinking about how it’s all or nothing and just start doing what you can do to get to your end result. Take photos along the way and ditch the scale because in these photos I only have a 5lbs difference in weight.
